The story centers on two couples: Ho-seok, a laid-off worker, and his wife Mi-ok, and documentary filmmaker Ye-ji and her husband Sang-woo. Ye-ji approaches Mi-ok and Ho-seok to document the lives of laid-off workers, and the couples from very different circumstances become entangled through the filming. Jeon Do-yeon plays Mi-ok, Sul Kyung-gu plays Ho-seok, Jo Yeo-jeong plays Ye-ji, and Zo In-sung plays Sang-woo.
Two couples grow closer through the camera
The film’s central tension lies in how the stories captured on camera unsettle the characters’ private relationships. Netflix’s synopsis says Mi-ok grows closer to Ye-ji after agreeing to be filmed, and begins to develop complicated feelings for Sang-woo as well. Ye-ji’s aim of documenting life after layoffs collides with the emotions of those in front of her camera, bringing into view Lee Chang-dong’s interest in class and desire.
This is Lee’s first feature film in eight years, since ‘Burning.’ It received the Grand Jury Prize at the Venice International Film Festival, and Netflix’s final trailer, released October 20, showed the two couples meeting and taking a summer trip. The festival honor and the film’s four-star cast have helped build interest ahead of its release.
