[Diary Point = Reporter Eom Ju-yong] KT on Nov. 2 stopped new sign-ups, number transfers and device changes for 3G phones and LTE phones that do not support HD Voice (VoLTE). Existing customers whose phones were on the eligible-device list as of midnight that day can apply for transition support. This does not mean KT ended 3G service on Nov. 2, so it should not be confused with an immediate cutoff of service on a parent’s phone.

First, check the phone’s model name in its settings. On most Android phones, go to “Settings → About phone”; on an iPhone, go to “Settings → General → About.” The surest way to confirm whether a phone is a 3G model or an LTE model that supports HD Voice on KT is to give the model name to KT customer service or a store. Even if an HD Voice or VoLTE option appears in the settings, that alone does not guarantee the model is supported or activated; confirm by model name as well.

KT said eligible customers are those who were using a 3G phone or an LTE phone without HD Voice support as of midnight on Nov. 2. Eligibility may differ for people who changed phones or canceled their line after that time. Those who qualify can choose one of three transition support options: a free device replacement, support toward buying a device themselves, or a monthly bill discount.

Free replacements and purchase support have different terms

Customers who switch to one of three designated LTE or 5G phone models receive a 12,000 won monthly discount on their mobile service bill for 24 months. Customers who buy a device of their choice can receive 150,000 won in device-change points plus a 12,000 won monthly discount for a phone line, or 75,000 won in points plus a 6,000 won monthly discount for a smart-device line. KT said the self-purchase option can be combined with its standard subsidy.

Customers who keep their current device and choose a bill discount receive 14,000 won off per month for a phone line or 7,000 won for a smart-device line for 24 months. KT says this discount can be combined with an existing optional contract discount. The specific models available for free replacement and the application steps for each option should be checked in the line-specific details KT sends by text and posts on its website and app.

Termination and number transfers also qualify for support and penalty waivers

Eligible customers who cancel their line or switch to another carrier without moving to LTE or 5G will receive termination support of 40,000 won for a phone line or 20,000 won for a smart-device line. KT also announced that penalties arising from a device transition, cancellation or number transfer will be waived. Since support amounts differ for phone and smart-device lines, including tablets, first check what type of line is under a parent’s name.

KT described the move as a restriction on new transactions involving the affected devices, not an end to service for existing customers. Eligibility and HD Voice compatibility by device can be confirmed through KT customer service or a store, or in line-specific notices on KT.com and the KT app. KT said it will review the process for ending 3G service after providing transition support to customers.
