[DiaryPoint | Reporter Park Bo-young] Lee Chang-dong’s short film ‘Heartbeat’ will stream worldwide on Netflix on Nov. 2. The platform has not separately announced a release time for the film. Netflix originals generally go live at midnight Pacific Time, which converts to 5 p.m. Korea time that day.
That 5 p.m. estimate is based on Netflix’s usual release schedule. Netflix says it lists a specific release time on a title’s detail page when one has been set. Check the film’s page in your account to confirm when it becomes available.
A 28-minute story told through Cheol-i’s eyes
‘Heartbeat’ premiered at the 23rd Jeonju International Film Festival in 2022 and runs 28 minutes. The story follows Cheol-i, a boy whose mother has depression and whose father is staging a protest atop a tower crane. When Cheol-i misses a call from his mother, he rushes home, gripped by anxiety.
It is Lee Chang-dong’s first short as a director and was made on the theme of depression at the suggestion of the World Health Organization and the Beijing Contemporary Art Foundation. Netflix says the film connects with the world of its upcoming feature ‘Possible Love.’ In a shorter format, it follows a child’s perspective as a family faces a crisis.
Kim Gun-woo, Jeon Do-yeon and Sol Kyung-gu star
Child actor Kim Gun-woo plays Cheol-i, with Jeon Do-yeon as his mother. Sol Kyung-gu voices his father. Lee Chang-dong directed the film; the Jeonju International Film Festival credits Lee and Oh Jung-mi as screenwriters.
Netflix says subtitles will be available in several languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, French and German. After release, check the title page for the languages actually offered, including Korean, and whether the film is playable in your region.
The Netflix release gives viewers another chance to see the 2022 film, first shown at a festival. Lee Chang-dong’s ‘Possible Love’ is also set to premiere on the platform on Nov. 6.
