[Diary Point=Reporter Kim Jeong-hun] Mirae Asset Securities said on November 7 that an external hacking incident exposed account numbers belonging to about 3,800 customers and personal information for 35,255 employees. The company said the customer data consisted only of account numbers; other sensitive customer information, such as account holder names, was not exposed.

The company said it detected unusual access to its mobile web phone-verification login service on November 4, and that its internal groupware system, “mi-global,” was also attacked on November 5. The employee data total includes information on former employees and contractors.

Check the company’s official channels to see if you’re affected

To check whether your account was affected, review the personal data breach notice on the Mirae Asset Securities website or the notice in its official app. Rather than tapping a lookup link in a search ad or text message, open the app you normally use or type the company’s address yourself to reach its announcement.

You can also contact the customer service channel listed in the company’s notice with questions about your individual case. Exposure of an account number alone does not mean that login passwords or authentication methods were also exposed. Do not enter account details or passwords on unverified links.

Report messages offering compensation for the breach

South Korea’s Personal Information Protection Commission has warned people about phone calls and text messages that request personal information or money while promising compensation for a data breach. The commission says it “never asks for personal information or cash” and advises people to report suspicious contacts to the police at 112 or the Personal Information Infringement Report Center at 118.

Do not follow links or call numbers included in a text message. Verify the information through the official app or a company number you already have saved, rather than a number provided by the caller. Do not share verification codes or transfer money to another account. Keep suspicious messages and call records in case you need them to file a report.

Mirae Asset Securities said it would operate a temporary customer service desk from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on November 7 to take reports and inquiries. Check the notices section of the company website or its official app for further updates.
