[DiaryPoint = Reporter Choi Seung-jin] The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced on November 5 that its 2027 spring Costume Institute exhibition will be “extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday.” The exhibition opens May 9 at the Met Fifth Avenue in New York, following the Met Gala on May 3.

The exhibition looks at how familiar clothes such as jeans, T-shirts, hoodies, trench coats and puffer jackets—and everyday materials such as paper, plastic and metal—are transformed by designers. It will feature garments that expand the uses and meanings of ordinary objects through sewing, construction, material experimentation and playful ideas.

Andrew Bolton, curator in charge of the Costume Institute, said, “Everyday dress carries extraordinary meaning.” He explained that the memories and attachments people build over years of wearing favorite T-shirts or jeans help give those clothes meaning.

The exhibition is organized around two themes: “familiar forms,” which reworks the shapes of everyday clothing, and “everyday materials,” which makes use of previously used or worn materials. Recycling and upcycling are also central themes, as the show considers how a garment’s former use connects to its new design.

The exhibition opens with Undercover’s Fall/Winter 2024–25 collection by Jun Takahashi. Inspired by director Wim Wenders’s film “Perfect Days,” the collection expresses the daily life and multiple roles of a working woman through layered clothing.

The exhibition runs through January 9, 2028. The Met Gala dress code will be announced at a later date.
